* Sri Lanka establishes an advisory council for human tissue and organ transplant

Sept 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Health Ministry has appointed an advisory council to consult on human tissue and organ transplant in the country.

The Health Ministry has said that an Advisory Council was appointed in conformity to the Human Tissues Act No. 48 adopted in 1987 with the aim to streamline the mechanism for the transplant of human tissues and organs.

The Council will establishes the legal framework for tissue procurement and transplantation in Sri Lanka. The Council will also facilitate the search of donors for the transplant of organs.

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has handed over the letters of appointment to the members of the Council today, the state-run TV said.

The Health Services Director General will be serving as the Chairman of this Council. Prof. Mandika Wijeratne, Vajira Dissanayake and Specialists Dr, Pathma Gunaratne and Dr. Charith Fonseka have also been appointed to this Council.
