Sept 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Federation of University Teachers' Associations (FUTA) has filed a petition in Supreme Court against granting graduating rights to the South Asian Institute of Medicine.
FUTA Chairman Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri has filed the fundamental rights petition citing that his fundamental rights are violated due to granting the rights of offering MBBS degrees to the South Asian Institute Medicine.
Sri Lanka Medical Council, University Grants Commission, South Asian Institute of Medicine and other persons have been named as the defendants of the fundamental rights petition.
South Asian Institute of Medicine is a private medical college located in Colombo district. Sri Lanka Medical Council has not endorsed it although the Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayaka supports it.
A five member committee of the Ministry of Health has also recommended suspending the recruitment of students to the university due to lack of quality of education provided.
