* Sri Lanka's governing party councilor criticizes minister's actions
Mon, Sep 24, 2012, 10:25 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 24, Colombo: A governing party councilor from Sri Lanka's Southern Provincial Council has criticized the actions of a government minister and his son.

United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Southern Provincial Councilor, Major Ajith Prasanna has said that the actions of Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva and his son, Malaka Silva have defamed the President.

He has told a news conference in Galle that the father and son have humiliated a war hero and he would take to the streets in protest if the Minister and his son continue to act in this manner.

According to Major Prasanna, Malaka Silva has brought discredit and shame upon the war heroes and caused them grave mental distress by the recent attack on the Army major at a hotel in Colombo.

"Over 28,000 war heroes sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country, while a large number of them are today in a state of disability. By the acts of Malaka Silva, who behaves in a very unruly and rowdy manner at night clubs, he is insulting these war heroes. I might even be abducted or assaulted for making this statement. However, I am not a person who is afraid to stand up or voice my opinion regarding injustice, no matter who the perpetrators are," he has told the media.

He has added that Minister Silva was destroying the government's good relations with the general public through his actions.

Malaka Silva, Rehan Wijerathna, son of a late former minister, and 5 others were charged over the alleged assault on the Army major.
