Sept 23, Colombo: The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has adopted two resolutions against the threat and influence against the country's judiciary.
The BASL had convened a meeting yesterday morning and Attorney Upul Jayasuriya had moved two resolutions that were seconded by President's Counsel Hemantha Warnakulasuriya.
The resolutions had been against the threat and intimidation by certain executive agencies on the judiciary and the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) and the derogatory statement made by a media head about the judiciary.
The resolutions were unanimously adopted and the BASL had agreed to examine the legal implications of the comments made by the head of the media institution and to move a contempt of court case against the media head and the board of directors of the media institution.
The first resolution that was adopted expresses solidarity with the judiciary, the JSC and the Judges Association who have issued two press statements on the threat and influence made by certain executive agencies attacking the autonomy of the JSC, which is an offense under the Constitution.
The second resolution is against certain statements made by a head of a media institution against the Chief Justice and the judiciary.
