Tue, Sep 18, 2012, 06:44 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) together with the major Muslim party, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) established the administration of the Eastern Provincial Council today and elected a Muslim councilor to lead the provincial government.

UPFA councilor Mohamed Najeeb Abdul Majeed, was sworn in before the President, Mahinda Rajapaksa this afternoon at the Temple Trees.

Majeed was a representative of Trincomalee for the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress earlier in the parliament and served as Minister of Co-operatives. However, SLMC expelled him from the party in 2004 and he subsequently joined the UPFA.

Meanwhile, the former Chief Minister and the leader of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) party Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan was appointed as an Advisor to the President.

Eastern Province Governor Mohan Jayawickrama, Ministers Susil Premajayantha, Rauf Hakeem, A.L.M. Athaullah, Rishad Bathiyutheen and Dullas Alahapperuma also participated in the occasion.
