Sept 09, Colombo: Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma says in reference to the implementation of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) report, the Commonwealth could offer partnership in capacity-building to Sri Lanka.
Sharma has issued a statement prior to his arrival in Colombo to attend the 58th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference.
He has said, "In terms of our potential support to Sri Lanka in implementing the recommendations of the LLRC report, we can offer partnership in capacity-building to advance the Commonwealth goals of development, democracy and respect for diversity."
Sharma is to meet with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris during his visit to Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, Commonwealth Spokesperson Richard Uku has been quoted in the local media saying that although specific details were not available on possible areas of engagement to implement the LLRC recommendations, there was potential for collaboration.
Sharma is expected to discuss the preparations for the next Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting to be held in Sri Lanka in November next year when he meets with senior Sri Lankan government members.
