Oct 28, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa attended the largest mini rugby tournament in Sri Lanka held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Sporting Complex at Diyagama in Homagama Saturday evening.
The President presented certificates to the winners of the mini rugby tournament and posed for a group photograph with them.
Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union and the Education Ministry jointly organized the tournament with the participation of 3,780 players from 380 teams for a Guinness record making it the tournament with the highest player participation in the history of Sri Lanka.
School children from outstations such as Jaffna, Trincomalee, Embilipitiya and Ampara also participated in the tournament. The President presented certificates and a rugby ball to each team.
At the event, the President instructed sports authorities to provide sports facilities to all school teams that participated in the tournament, for the benefit of sports.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena and President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union Asanka Seneviratne also participated in the occasion.
