Sun, Oct 28, 2012, 09:53 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka's hydro power catchment areas in the hill country are currently receiving heavy rainfall from the north-eastern monsoon, says the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).

Lakshapana catchment area reported over 100 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours, Meteorological Department announced.

However, the contribution of hydropower to the power production has not been increased yet. As of Saturday the more expensive thermal power provided 77 percent of power requirement and hydropower provided only 22 percent.

Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri meanwhile, said two spill gates of Lakshapana reservoir have been opened. He warned the residents living downstream of the Kelani River to watch for rising water levels of the river.

Sri Lanka Meteorological Department forecasts heavy showers in the next few days as a low pressure condition is developing in the in the Bay of Bengal, which could affect the atmosphere over Northern and Eastern areas of Sri Lanka.
