Oct 28, Anuradhapura: The Anuradhapura Archaeological Police Unit have arrested a ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) member of the local Pradeshiya Sabha Saturday for constructing illegal structures in an archeological site.

The police, on a directive from the Anuradhapura Deputy Inspector General (DIG), arrested Sarath Weerasinghe, UPFA member and the former Deputy Chairman of the Anuradhapura Pradeshiya Sabha for erecting two buildings within an archaeological site in Periyakulam in the Anuradhapura District.

The Department of Archaeology had brought the illegal constructions to the attention of the police.

The suspect will be produced in the Anuradhapura Magistrate's Court, today, local media reports said.
