Oct 22, Colombo: Sources close to Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) say that the party leadership has decided to take disciplinary action against the party councilors of the Eastern Provincial Council.
These provincial councilors are charged of voting in favor of the Divi Neguma Bill which was passed in the Eastern Provincial Council as a prerequisite of the parliament to pass it.
Supreme Court ruled that the Divi Neguma bill needed to be passed in the Provincial Councils before it is passed in the parliament.
It was passed in all the Provincial Councils except the Northern Provincial Council which is not yet established.
However, the SLMC hierarchy had advised the party councilors to demand the vote be postponed and to refrain from voting.
Sources say that the SLMC hierarchy is of the view that the Divi Neguma bill infringed the powers of the Provincial Councils.
