* Marxist union in Sri Lanka renews call for 6 percent allocation for education
Sun, Oct 21, 2012, 07:46 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 21, Colombo: The Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated National Trade Union Center (NTUC) of Sri Lanka will launch an awareness campaign this week to renew the demand for the 6 percent of the GDP budgetary allocation for the education sector.

The NTUC has organized a leaflet distribution campaign in Colombo Fort on Tuesday (23) at 10 a.m. as the first step of the awareness campaign to continue with their demand for the education sector.

Several trade unions affiliated to the education sector are to participate in the leaflet distribution campaign.

NTUC sources said that one million leaflets are to be distributed island wide under the campaign.

The demand for 6 percent was first pushed by the Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) during their strike action to win a salary hike.

The NTUC said it would continue with the FUTA's demands for the education sector although FUTA has ended its trade union action after the government agreed to allocate more for the sector in the next year's budget.
