Oct 16, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) is preparing to hold its annual convention on December 1st at the party headquarters, Sirikotha.
The amendments to the UNP Constitution that have been approved by the party's Working Committee are to be ratified at the convention. An amendment is to also be introduced to the party Constitution to extend the terms of the party leadership.
The party convention this year will be open to the UNP local government members as well.
However, the UNP local government members have told the local media that they were concerned over the move to allow only a selected number of party members from the local councils to attend the convention.
They have said the decision to allow a selected number of members to attend the party convention is a move by the party leadership to get the proposed amendments to the Constitution passed without any objection.
