Oct 15, Colombo: A group of Provincial Councilors of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) will meet today in Colombo to discuss the participation in the rally calling to abolish the executive presidency.
The rally is to be held on October 18 under the leadership of the former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka.
Today's meeting is held in the office of Western Provincial Councilor Shiral Lakthilaka and it has been summoned by several rebel Provincial Councilors such as Lakthilaka himself and Maithri Gunarathne.
The rally has created a new controversy in the already fractured opposition party as the party working committee has decided to ban the participation of party members in the rally and decided to take disciplinary action against the UNP activists who would take part despite the ban.
However, a number of UNP activists including the former Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya have confirmed the participation.
UNP MPs Palitha Range Bandara and Palitha Thewarapperuma were seen yesterday at Kalutara engaging in propaganda work for the rally.
