* Sri Lanka's Opposition Leader calls all trade unions to demand a salary hike together
Fri, Oct 12, 2012, 09:14 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 12, Colombo: Opposition Leader of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremasinghe says that all trade unions should unite and fight for a salary increase from the government.

Speaking during a trade union convention at the United National Party (UNP) headquarters, Sirikotha, Wickremasinghe noted that a salary increase could be secured only through a united struggle.

He explained that despite varying views of the trade unions, a united fight must be put forward to win demands for the working people and all trade unions could discuss and agree on a figure for the salary increase.

Wickremasinghe said it would be interesting to see if the government would provide benefits in the forthcoming 2013 budget to one percent of the society or provide relief to the remaining 99 percent.
