Thu, Oct 11, 2012, 12:32 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka Army , established in 1949 in post-Independence Ceylon, marked its 63rd anniversary Wednesday with the participation of its Commander, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as the chief guest.

The day's events included the Army Chief inspecting a Guard Turn-Out and presiding over a colorful parade and a special ceremony at CR & FC grounds, in Colombo.

The participants observed a one-minute silence to honor the memory of fallen War Heroes and those who went missing in action, during the three-decade long war against Tamil Tiger terrorists.

Army Commander presided over the ceremonial parade with regimental colors after inspecting the Guard Turn-Out, accorded in his honor.

Addressing the troops, the Commander said Sri Lanka Army is all the time alert to any kind of challenges that would prop up against the country and is ready to work for the best interest of the country.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya called upon all the Army personnel to always safeguard inherent characteristics of the professional Army, to which "you serve as a guardian of the nation and a patriotic warrior at the expense of your own life."
