* Sri Lanka business chamber calls for quick justice over attack on judge

Oct 10, Colombo: the Sri Lanka's main business chamber, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) strongly condemning the attack on a High Court judge has called on the government to bring the culprits to justice quickly.

"Failure to do so will harm the credibility of the Government and the country's law enforcement agencies," the main business chamber warned.

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce in a release said it is gravely concerned over the on the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) by an unidentified group on Sunday morning and condemns it in the strongest possible terms.

The Chamber noted that the attack came at a time when the JSC had issued a statement alleging attempts to interfere with the independent functioning of the Judiciary and pointed out the government needs to act quickly to arrest the suspects.

While noting that the government has directed the Police to quickly initiate an investigation into this crime, the Chamber said it is crucial that those responsible are brought to justice speedily.

Unidentified attackers have stabbed High Court judge and the Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Manjula Tilakaratne on Saturday in Mount Lavinia.

Meanwhile, the judges and lawyers who boycotted the judicial functions this week in protest of the attack returned to work today.
