Oct 03, Colombo: The Chief Prelates of the Asgiriya and Malwatte Chapters in Sri Lanka have asked Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake to be flexible to resolve the three-month long strike by the university academics.
The Chief Prelates have asked the Minister to be flexible towards the issue and work cooperatively with all the parties on the university issue when he met the Buddhist leaders in Kandy today to discuss the current situation of the country's university system.
Meanwhile the striking university academics' union, Federation of University Teachers' Association, which had met the Chief Prelates earlier, met with the veteran trade unionist Bala Thampo of the Ceylon Mercantile Union (CMU) today.
During the meeting, Thampo has contributed Rs. 500,000 to the FUTA in support of the academics' strike. The striking university teachers have not received theirs salaries for the last three months.
