Jun 30, Colombo: The two raided internet websites were continuously publishing false defamatory news about in the public people in the country, the Sri Lankan government charged.
A statement by Director General of the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) Lakshman Hulugalle says that the offices of the two websites, Sri Lanka Mirror and the Sri Lanka X News in Rajagiriya were raided and sealed by the Criminal Investigation Department under a court order.
The MCNS statement noted that the two websites had continuously published false information targeting prominent people, with the objective of misguiding the general public.
The websites have not only discredited Sri Lanka but also misguided the international community, the MCNS charged.
Sri Lanka's Supreme Court recently siding with the government decided that registration was needed to ensure that the websites did not carry defamatory material and allowed the Ministry of Mass Media and Information to continue with its request to register websites that disseminate news and information on the country and its people.
The MCNS says the majority of websites have already been registered with the Ministry.
