Fri, Jul 20, 2012, 10:28 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 20, Colombo: Women in Sri Lanka are to protest today over the rise in the sexual abuse of women and children in the country.

A women's organization called, Women for Women has organized a joint protest today at the Lipton Circus at 2 p.m.

All women's rights groups, civil society members and female legislators in the country are to participate in the protest.

United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Rosy Senanayake has said that child rape, and sexual abuse against women have reached epic proportions.

She has observed that a woman, a student and not even a four year old toddler is spared by these abusers.

According to Senanayake, government needs to take full responsibility for the rise in sexual offences.

She has charged that while sexual offenses, especially child rapes have increased through the years, the government has not taken any action to address the situation.

The women and children activists have urged the government to impose death penalty on the perpetrators of crimes against the women and children.
