July 19, Colombo: The elections for three provincial councils in Sri Lanka will be held on September 08, Commissioner of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya has announced.
The Sri Lankan voters will go to polls to elect members to the North Central, Eastern and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils.
Acceptance of nominations for the three dissolved provincial councils has ended at 12 noon Thursday.
Nominations for seven districts in the three PCs have been submitted by independent groups as well as political parties to the respective Returning Officers of the districts.
The ruling party, United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), the major opposition United National Party (UNP) and the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) have submitted nominations for all the seven districts.
Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has said that elections symbols for the independent groups will be provided according to their preferences.
The three provincial councils were dissolved on June 27 before their terms were to expire. The term of the Eastern Provincial Council was to end in March 2013 and the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils in September 2013.
