July 14, Colombo: An election monitor of Sri Lanka has complained to the Elections Commissioner about political discussions being held in schools in the Anuradhapura District in the North Central Province ahead of the election.
People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has complained that these political meetings are being held under the guise of parents meetings.
PAFFREL has pointed out that the abuse of state resources in any form was a violation of election laws.
PAFFREL Executive Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi has told Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya during a meeting that local politicians planning on contesting the forthcoming North Central Provincial Council election have organized these meetings in schools in the Anuradhapura District.
Hettiarachchi after informing the Elections Commissioner about the matter had discussed how best to prevent the abuse of state resources during election campaigns.
According to PAFFREL Executive Director, steps should be taken to publish the names of the politicians who abide by the law thereby exposing those who violate the law.
