July 14, Colombo: Several estate sector political parties in Sri Lanka are to form an alliance to contest the forthcoming Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council election.
Governing party ally, the Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC), the Democratic People's Front (DPF) and Upcountry People's Front (UPF) are to file a common list of candidates for the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council.
The alliance is to contest under the CWC's cockerel symbol.
CWC sources say that the party had decided not to contest with the governing party and contest separately under its own symbol since CWC would be able to win more seats.
The DPF and UPFA have agreed to contest the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council election in alliance with the CWC since there is considerable block of estate sector votes in the Ratnapura and Kegalle districts.
The CWC contested the last Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council election in 2008 separately as well.
