July 10, Colombo: Sources of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main constituent party of the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) say that a final decision regarding party's Chief Minister candidates will be taken today.
The final decision is to be taken by the SLFP leader President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the SLFP central committee meeting to be held this evening under the patronage of the President.
The SLFP, the main constituent of the UPFA fields the vast majority of the candidates for the elections.
The nominations for the three Provincial Councils that will hold elections in September are also to be approved by the SLFP central committee today.
Sources indicate that the former Chief Ministers of the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern Provincial Councils are likely to be re-appointed as the Chief Minister candidates of the UPFA.
An earlier report said yesterday that the UPFA has decided to nominate the incumbent Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan for the chief minister post of the Eastern Province.
The nomination period for the parties to field candidates for the three provincial councils will begin Thursday, July 12 and will continue for a week.
