July 09, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today visited the residence of late Dr. Geethanjana Mendis in Colombo to pay his last respects and expressed his condolences to the family members.
Dr. Mendis, a consultant neurologist, passed away at a private hospital in Colombo yesterday of a heart failure. He was 62 years old at the time of his death. His funeral took place at the General Cemetery, in Borella today.
Dr. Mendis served as the Director General of the Sports Medical Unit until his removal by the Sports Minister in October last year. He was also the head of the National Anti-Doping Agency and the Chairman of Medicina Alternativa, an international organization promoting complementary and alternative medicine.
