July 07, Colombo: A teachers' union in Sri Lanka has commenced a campaign to collect one million signatures to a petition calling for the resignation of Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake and Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena.
Ceylon Teacher Services Union (CTSU) is to take the petition to every district in the country to collect signatures.
CTSU General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said that the petition sought the resignation of the two ministers due to their failure to address the issues faced by the country's education sector.
He observed that the two ministers were responsible for the crises in the education sector.
He added that the education authorities have so far not taken any proper steps on addressing the Z-score issue even after a Supreme Court directive has been issued on the matter.
According to Jayasinghe, the CTSU would continue with its protest campaign until the issues in the education sector are addressed.
The Higher Education Minister has earlier said that the President is to appoint a committee to implement the Supreme Court recommendations on the Z-scores for last year's GCE Advanced Level examination.
