Aug 31, Colombo: The Sri Lanka police have arrested 47 persons over alleged election law violations in the three provinces where elections are to be held next month.
Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana has said that the arrests have been made following complaints received from the public in the Sabaragamuwa, North Central and Eastern Provinces.
According to the police, the largest number of complaints in the run up to the provincial council elections has been recorded from the Batticaloa District in the East with 17 complaints.
Most recently, a propaganda office of the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) in North Central Province was destroyed while five Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) offices in the Ampara district had also come under attack on Tuesday, according to the poll monitors.
