Aug 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police have arrested a Provincial Councilor of opposition United National Party (UNP) and a local government politician in Galle Sunday on charges of obstructing police.
Police arrested UNP Southern Provincial Councilor Krishantha Pushpakumara and Bope-Poddala Pradeshiya Sabha member Amila Nuwan for obstructing duties of police officers in the Akmeemana area and produced in the Galle Magistrate's Court. The two local politicians have remanded till August 08.
With the two arrests, Sri Lanka police had arrested five local government politicians within a 24-hour period on various charges.
The Badulla police have arrested a member of the Badulla Pradeshiya Sabha Saturday night for assaulting an official of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board.
The Health Minister of the Central Province, Sunil Amaratunga, was arrested Saturday for allegedly assaulting a doctor.
A member of Rideegama Pradeshiya Sabha was arrested for attacking a security vehicle of Kurunegala district MP Nimal Wijesinghe Saturday.
In a separate incident Galenbindunuwewa police have arrested an opposition party of the Galenbindunuwewa Pradeshiya Sabha for assaulting a resident at Megodawewa area in Maharambawewa.
Involvement of Sri Lankan local government politicians in crimes has become a serious concern to the police as well as to the public.
