Aug 02, Anuradhapura: A tense situation has risen in the Thambuttegama area of Anuradhapura District in North Central Province of Sri Lanka as the police had fired tear gas to disperse a crowd attacking the Thambuttegama police station.
An angry mob of residents has pelted stones at the police station for releasing a driver suspected of killing a female pedestrian, local Daily Mirror reported.
The residents angered by the police move had reportedly marched to the police station with the body of the victim and stoned the Police station.
The Police Media Spokesman Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana has told the Daily Mirror that the police had fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
According to the Police Spokesman the suspect has been produced before the courts and the magistrate has released him on bail.
The situation in the area has now been brought under control, the Spokesman has said.
