Jan 28, Colombo: Preliminary investigations carried out to probe the riots in Sri Lanka's main remand prison have revealed a carefully coordinated internal plan for the uprising, a government minister said.

The Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera said participating in a program at the state-run radio SLBC said the investigations have revealed that uprising in the Welikada prison had been "meticulously arranged".

A special investigation unit has been appointed to conduct a wide investigation on the incident that injured 26 people including five prison officials and caused over Rs,. 7.5 million worth property damage to the Magazine remand prison complex.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is also carrying out their independent investigations, the Minister said.

He said the protest has been carried out against the appointment of a new authorized officer to the prison who was strict on drug peddling activity in the prison.

Preliminary investigations have shown that two prison officials were behind Tuesday's riots in the main remand prison.

The special unit appointed to probe the incident is directed to submit its report by January 31.
