Jan 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka Coast Conservation Department says that the government has allocated Rs. 500 million to implement measures to strengthen the coastal safety and to prevent the sea erosion.
The Department has planned to establish ten coastal parks in Western, Southern and Eastern coasts of the country. Two of them have already been established in Mattakkuliya Crow Island in Northern Colombo and near Matara town in the Southern Province.
Sri Lanka Navy provides assistance to the Coastal Conservation Department to establish green belts of mangrove in the narrow coastal belts.
The department has also taken steps to pump sand by a special ship and build beaches and breakwaters in areas where sea erosion threat is severe, says the Department.
The Department says that the beaches of Bambalapitiya and Kollupitiya in Colombo city Ratmalana, Wattala, Uswetakeiyawa, Prithipura, Wedikanna in suburbs and the Poruthota beach in Negombo are severely affected by sea erosion.
