Jan 28, Colombo: Government medical officers in Sri Lanka warn that the country is facing the risk of losing the services of many doctors due to the failure to provide them with their due allowances and other perks.
The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) says that 138 doctors have migrated to other countries in the last two years for better employment opportunities.
GOMA Vice Secretary, Dr. Upul Gunasekera has said that doctors receive a sum of Rs. 12,000 as a transport allowance although they are due to receive Rs. 33,000.
The GMOA has noted that the President had agreed to provide a transport allowance of Rs. 28,000 to doctors, which has now been increased to Rs. 33,000. The government however has failed to make the due payments.
The state doctors are to meet with Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara on Monday (30) to discuss the payment and other perks due to the doctors in the country.
