Sat, Jan 28, 2012, 12:09 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy has again come to the aid of four Indian fishermen distressed in the seas off the northern coast of Jaffna Peninsula.

The Navy said the Naval Fast Gunboat 'SLNS Edithara II ' attached to the Northern Naval Command rescued four Indian fishermen stranded in the seas north-west of Delft on 26th January 2012.

Their fishing vessel named "Muruganthuna" had become non-operational due to a broken gear box shaft.

The Navy has towed the vessel along with the rescued Indian fishing crew to Delft Island and handed over to Delft Police for further action.

In a separate incident, naval personnel attached to SLNS Vijaya of the North-western Naval Command have arrested five people engaged in illegal fishing at Dutch Bay in Kalpitiya on Thursday.

The Navy has seized the night diving equipment the fishermen used illegally and handed over the fishermen and their equipment to the Assistant Fisheries Director (Puttlam) for legal action.
