Jan 26, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government Thursday urged the country's opposition political parties to cooperate with the government to arrive at a political solution acceptable to all communities to devolve power.
Addressing a media briefing today, Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said the government is in a clear stance about appointing a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to negotiate a solution and the government in is adopting a versatile policy.
He requested the opposition parties to name their representatives to the PSC to begin the process of finding avenues to resolve the ethnic crisis.
The Minister pointed out that the main opposition United National Party has not nominated their representatives to the PSC yet and attributed the party's reaction to the internal crisis in the party.
"But the stance of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Tamil National Alliance is also not clear," the Minister said.
Addressing the issue of devolving land and police powers the Minister told reporters that the government plans to extensively discuss the extent of these powers to be devolved to the provinces and emphasized the need to participate in the PSC to arrive at a solution acceptable to the majority of the people.
The opposition parties of Sri Lanka are however, of the opinion that the PSC is another tactic of the government to delay the power devolution process.
