Jan 26, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) claims that the government is not planning to implement a political solution that goes beyond the 13th Amendment.
UNP parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella told a press conference Thursday that the government has made a statement about implementing a political solution beyond the 13th Amendment in order to mislead the international community.
He explained to the media that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), which was in the opposition in 1987, had opposed the Indo-Lanka Agreement and the setting up of the 13th Amendment.
However, he said the SLFP led United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government has now agreed to honor the 13th Amendment.
The 13th Amendment at the time was viewed by all opposition political parties as the first step towards separatism.
