Feb 06, Colombo: Plantation Industries Minister of Sri Lanka Mahinda Samarasinghe says the government is working towards to make the country re-acquire its position as the leading tea exporter in the world. Sri Lanka was the top tea exporter in the world until 2006.
Speaking at a conference in Colombo, the Minister has said the country's tea industry has recorded significant gains in the recent years and the government expects to record an important threshold in the local tea production this year.
The government has initiated various programs to promote the industry in the foreign market while developing the standards of the local industry.
The local tea industry would also mark its 145th anniversary in the commercial tea industry.
The country recorded earnings amounting to Rs. 1.5 billion from tea exports last year. Sri Lanka is now the third largest tea exporting country and the fourth largest tea producer in the world.
