* Sri Lanka police to arrest more suspects of the attack on British tourist

Dec 28, Tangalle: Health sources at the Karapitiya Hospital in Sri Lanka say that the female Russian tourist injured in the Christmas eve attack at a tourist resort in Tangalle by a local politician has been transferred to a private hospital in Colombo on the request of her family.

Sri Lanka Tourist Board assisted the tourist who underwent a minor surgery at Karapitiya Hospital in Galle. Hospital sources say that her condition is not serious.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered an investigation on the killing of a British tourist and assaulting his companion by a gang of thugs led by the Chairman of the local government Pradeshiya Sabha of Tangalle.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department is to arrest seven more persons.

Khuram Shaikh Zaman, 32, a British tourist from Manchester died on Christmas Eve after he and his colleague, 23-year old Russian national Victoria Alexandrovna were attacked by the gang.

Sampath Chandra Pushpa Vidanapathirana, 24, the chairman of Tangalle village council, and three others have been arrested already.

Investigations have revealed that the suspects were heavily inebriated and mingled with the dancing tourists. The deceased, 32-year-old British national Khuram Shaikh Zaman had photographed the dancers and later involved in mediating a quarrel, police say.

The assailants used an automatic rifle as well but the killing was due to lacerations, the coroner ruled. The woman was injured while trying to save her companion from the attack, the police said.

Meanwhile, the police have deployed five teams t investigate the incident.
