Sat, Jun 4, 2011, 12:08 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 03, Geneva: The Sri Lankan government has released all the former female combatants of the defeated terror organization, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), and they are with their families now, a senior diplomat said.

Addressing the plenary session of the 17th session of United Nations Human Right Council on Protection and promotion of Women in Geneva Friday, Sri Lanka's envoy Sugeeshwara Gunaratna said the Sri Lankan government has been successfully engaged in the task of rehabilitation and reintegration of its ex-combatants.

"All female ex-combatants who were beneficiaries of this program have now been released and are back with their families," the envoy said.

The envoy announced that all female ex-combatants who were forcibly recruited by the LTTE have undergone rehabilitation and those who wish to pursue their education are being given every opportunity to do so.

Other female fighters have been engaged in vocational training and other government programs, Gunaratna added.

Describing the measures taken by the Sri Lankan government for the protection against violence on women in the former war-torn areas, the diplomat said the government has established additional women and children's desks in police stations and recruited Tamil speaking police officers, both men and women.
