July 28, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has decided to form more local government bodies in the country soon after the conclusion of elections to the 23 remaining local government bodies, Local Government and Provincial Council Ministry official has said.
The media quoting a Ministry official said that the existing 335 local government bodies in the country would see the addition of more Pradeshiya Sabhas following the conclusion of elections.
The official has said that the formation of new local government bodies has been delayed due to the holding of local government elections in a scattered manner.
The Ministry has appointed a committee to decide on the number of new local bodies that needed to be formed. However, a new Pradeshiya Sabha is to be formed in the Puttalam District, the official has said.
Sri Lanka held elections for 234 of the 335 local authorities in the country on March 17 this year. Of the remaining bodies, 65 local government bodies had polls on July 23. Elections for 34 localities were not held due to the hosting of Cricket World Cup while elections for 2 government bodies are delayed due to the demining.
The ruling party had secured 250 of the local government bodies for which the elections were held.
