Jan 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka's oldest leftist political party Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) is contesting several local government institutes as an individual group at the upcoming polls.
Although the LSSP is a party in the ruling coalition United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), the party is contesting separately for several local government bodies including Baddegama and Beruwala.
The LSSP team contesting the Baddegama Pradeshiya Sabha is led by Sri Lanka's first Buddhist monk MP Ven. Baddegama Samitha Thero.
The Thero told media that the move is due to the failure of the UPFA to provide more space for the candidates of the LSSP in areas where the left party is strong.
