* Sri Lanka's Opposition Leader asks why a state of emergency was not declared during floods
Fri, Jan 21, 2011, 07:17 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe asked the government why a state of emergency was not declared to help the thousands of flood victims.

Wickremasinghe told parliament today that the recent floods had affected five percent of the country's population.

He noted that the government did not provide relief to the affected persons according to a proper plan.

Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera however responded to Wickremasinghe's query stating the relief efforts were being carried out in an efficient manner.
