Thu, Apr 21, 2011, 11:00 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka market sources say that the vegetable harvest has increased to a level beyond the demand and the prices have gone down considerably.

Colombo city vegetable trade center Manning Market sources say that yesterday alone 50 tons of vegetables were discarded due to lack of demand although the prices were low.

Manning Market had received around 1,000 tons of vegetables by yesterday morning, a spokesman said.

The price of many low country vegetables were in the range of Rs. 10 to 30 per kilo.

Dry zone Dambulla and Thambuththegama economic center sources also said that the centers were receiving large stocks of vegetables at very low prices but the demand was low.

Vegetable prices went up sharply in Sri Lanka following the heavy rainfall in the early months of the year and food patterns of consumers changed while the commercial farming home garden cultivation of vegetables also increased, market analysts say.
