Thu, Apr 14, 2011, 11:48 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 14, Colombo: The tests conducted in rain water and soil samples collected across the country have not shown any radioactivity yet indicating that the radiation leaked from Japan's Fukushima power plant has not flown to Sri Lanka via wind yet.

The National Atomic Energy Authority (NAEA) of Sri Lanka has informed the public there was no need to panic of Japan's radioactive materials.

Chairman of the Atomic Energy Authority in Colombo Prof Wimaladharma Abeywickrama has said that there was no impact on Sri Lanka since radioactive material from Japan has moved rapidly across the Pacific Ocean, the national news agency Lankapuwath reported.

Dangerous levels of radiation leaked from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant along Japan's northeastern coast crippled by the magnitude 8.9 earthquake and the ensued 23-foot tsunami.

Sri Lankan public has expressed concern over a possible fall out of radioactive materials due to the prevailing rainy weather conditions.

The Atomic Energy Authority has advised the people not to react to the rumors and asserted that they would inform the public immediately if there was any impact.

Further information concerning the issue can be obtained from the International Atomic Energy Authority website at www.iaea.org or by dialing 0112 533449.
