Sun, Apr 3, 2011, 11:06 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 03, Colombo: The Sri Lankan team, runners-up of the 2011 World Cup, returned to the country this morning ending their six-week journey to claim the coveted cup.

A large number of well-wishers including government ministers and parliamentarians have welcomed the Sri Lankan team at the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake this morning, local media reported.

The team is to be escorted to Independence Square in Colombo for a special welcome ceremony, Sri Lanka radio reported.

The team led by Kumar Sangakkara was placed at the second spot after losing to India at the final match played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India. India yesterday won the World Cup that eluded them for 28 years. Sri Lanka led by Arjuna Ranatunga won the Cup in 1996.
