Nov 14, Colombo: Fatal leptospirosis, commonly known as rat fever is spreading again in Sri Lanka, according to the Health Ministry sources.
The number of deaths due to leptospirosis in Sri Lanka so far this year totaled 89, the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health figures show. Another 3,627 persons have suffered from leptospirosis so far this year.
The highest number of leptospirosis cases has been reported in October this year. The Epidemiology Unit reported 601 cases of leptospirosis during the last month.
Leptospirosis is spread in Sri Lanka especially through paddy fields and a majority of the patients are farmers. However 19 out of the total deaths and 527 cases have been from the Colombo district.
The disease is transmitted from animal to animal and human, but not from human to human through physical contact.
