Nov 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka Army spokesman Major General Ubhaya Medawala says that the Army has defused 305,376 land mines so far in recently liberated areas in the country.
The Army has cleared an area of 1,861 square kilometers of Northern Province of land mines.
Around 1,000 Army officials are engaged in de-mining operations together with non-state organizations, Army says.
The Army spokesman said that the de-mining in the heavily mined lands in Mullaitivu district had been commenced. The last battle of the thirty-year war took place in this area.
The government says the resettlement of the remaining Internally Displaced People (IDP) in the camps will be completed once all landmines are cleared as 20,000 of the remaining 24,000 IDPs at Vettikulam Menik Farm are from the yet uncleared areas of Mullaitivu.
