Jan 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Health has taken over the administration of the Thriposha Company that produces nutritious meals to distribute free to pregnant women and children.
The Health Ministry last Friday (07) took over the company the was under the Sri Lanka Tobacco Company in a measure to improve the total production capacity to strengthen the government's welfare program.
The Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena said the production capacity of the Thriposha factory situated in Kandana in the Gampaha district will be maximized.
The company produces around 1.5 million packets of Thriposha every month and they are distributed among around 750,000 pregnant women, breast feeding mothers, and underweight infants.
For the current production amount which is only 60 percent of the requirement, about 10,000 tonnes of maize and 8,000 tonnes of soya beans are required annually as ingredients.
Sri Lanka government spends around Rs. 1.25 billion per year for the production of Thriposha meals.
