* Sri Lanka Air Force rescues flood victims as floods worsen

Jan 09, Ampara: The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Sunday has rescued 14 people who were stranded due to floods in the Tampitiya and Bogamu Yaya areas in the Ampara District.

Air Force Spokesperson Group Captain Janaka Nanayakkara told the media that an SLAF MI-17 helicopter is currently distributing dry rations and other needs in the Thoppigala area in the Batticaloa District. The Thoppigala area has been heavily affected by rain.

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) said that several Divisional Secretariat offices in the Eastern province are under water due to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, the Central Province (CP) Director of Education, Wijesiri Herath told the media that a decision has been made to close schools in the Central Province tomorrow (10) due to heavy rains and flood conditions in the Province.

Herath has said the decision to close schools tomorrow was taken since several roads in the Province have been inundated and after taking into consideration the safety of the school children.
