Jan 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando has said that the government has increased the number of eggs to be imported in the next shipment which is due to arrive in the country on Monday (03).
Fernando told the local media that the two million eggs imported in the first shipment were sold within five days.
The Minister has said eggs would be imported until the price of a local egg is dropped to Rs. 12 in the retail market.
According to Fernando, since the government imported eggs from India, the price of a local egg had reduced only by 50 cents. The price now stands at Rs. 16.50.
He has added that it was unreasonable for traders to sell eggs at Rs. 17 or more when the cost of producing an egg was only Rs. 7.50.
Fernando has noted that middle men were making a lot of money and it was unreasonable for them to have a profit margin of more than Rs. 3.50 to Rs. 4.00 per egg.
