Dec 28, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has decided to grant a fertilizer subsidy for the country's coconut growers to boost the coconut production.
The government expects the Cabinet to approve the measure at its next meeting to grant the subsidy.
Sri Lanka facing a crisis in supplying sufficient coconuts to the consumers has imported coconuts from India.
The state-run radio said the government has decided to initially issue four kilograms of fertilizers per coconut tree and three kilograms later.
Coconut growers holding less than ten acres of plantation will receive the fertilizer on the basis of number of trees while planters with more than ten acres will receive per acre basis, the government has informed.
The government plans to provide a 50 kilograms bag of fertilizer at Rs. 1000 to the coconut growers.
The coconut cultivations of the Southern Province of Sri Lanka had been affected by a coconut leaf disease and currently there is a severe shortage of coconuts.
