Dec 26, Colombo: The northeastern monsoon season has become active on Sri Lanka and the Northern, Eastern and North Central Provinces of the country are receiving excessive rainfall.
Sluice gates of a number of major reservoirs in these provinces have been opened to prevent damage to the tanks flooding the low lying areas down these reservoirs.
A part of the tank bund of a reservoir in Kahatagasdigiliya in Anuradhapura district was reported damaged.
Hill country Badulla district is experiencing excessive showers for four days increasing the risk of earth slips, says Meteorological Department.
National Disaster Management Center says that six refugee camps have been established in Batticaloa district for 594 displaced families.
Police says that 40 individuals including Buddhist priests and armed forces personnel are stranded in Somawathi since the access roads to this forest-locked sacred Buddhist shrine in the Eastern Province are impassable.
